How To Draw Percy Jackson With Riptide

:

There is no doubt that viria is racist & I know Percy is coded as a poc like I get it lol but it's just So Telling how the hill people are dying on is how she draws a character who is undoubtedly intended to be white by the author (Percy) whiter than annabeth, and not how she draws black girl (Sadie) whiter than Annabeth, and not how she draws a visibly Cherokee girl (piper) as whiter than Annabeth and with egregiously racist stereotypes. Like. Priorities, please

This might be controversial but I think y'all should calm down about the whole viria thing. Yes, her depiction of Annabeth is questionable, no discussion about that. And yes, Percy is described as tan, but he's never said to be latino. So I think it's totally reasonable to draw him as white (maybe not ghostly white but still). I also don't get the racism accusations bc the drawings I've seen of the POCs of the cast were not whitewashed.

diver-up:

this is going to be the last time i say something about this, b/c im tired, nothing is going to change, and there are real-world issues occurring as i type this that are infinitely more important than what i think about an artist on the internet. this post is also long, so if you're not interested, feel free to skip it - but please check out the last bit at the end.

my problem isn't with viria drawing percy as white. do i see him as latino? yes. however, he was obviously written with the intention of him being white. so like, while i and many others see percy as a character of color, ultimately people drawing percy as white comes nowhere near whitewashing established characters of color. if this hasn't come across in the posts i've made about the issue, that's on me. anyway, what makes that aspect of his presentation problematic is that viria literally stated on her instagram that the reason she draws percy so white and annabeth so dark when they're together is because she "likes how their skin tones contrast" or whatever. i shouldn't have to explain the fetishistic nature of dark skin present within that statement. i wouldnt care if annabeth had a tan and her other characters were colored correctly. my problem is not with the concept of annabeth being tan, so do not tell me that annabeth has been described with a tan because i know.

as for her treatment of characters of color, off the top of my head - let's start with piper. this is the official art for piper mclean. not only is her recent art of annabeth darker than an established native american character - but the feathers? the light eyes? the light skin? she couldn't even reference a real native person while making that art? ntm her past art of piper decked out in headbands/feathers/etc has literally influenced (racist) art of piper people are still making now.

this is sadie kane's official art. sadie kane is a character of color. she was never explicitly stated to be blonde or white - the books instead describe her as having "caramel hair" and skin "lighter than carter's" while also alluding to the fact that her classmates pinpoint her as a "mixed race girl."  here is a post about this. and before you say it, i get it - genetics are crazy. it's possible that sadie and carter could look entirely different, despite both being biracial. however, sadie's description in the books never alludes to her looking like a white blonde girl. and like… she doesn't have to be snowy white w/ straight blonde hair for her to struggle with self-identity or to be treated differently than carter.

here are some posts to look at in reference to viria's art. here is a post on harmful depictions of piper in pjo fan culture. here's something about hazel.

there's so much more, but like i said, i'm tired. with everything going on right now, there are much more useful things for my time, and the time of everyone reading this.  here is a link to bail funds and more information regarding protests. here are some black lgbt funds to donate to (happy pride everyone!). if you're out there protesting, stay safe.

zia rashid: burning sand beneath your feet, passion fruit, running until your lungs burn, crinkled parchment, notification dings, warm hugs, chopped hair, flowery perfume, crickets in the night, roaring rivers, indie music, kohl lined eyes, & bruised knuckles

heir-of-gondor:

do y'all ever just SCREAM because Annabeth wanted to create something permanent, something memorable and unforgettable and when Hera took Percy's memories, she couldn't pry Annabeth from his head,,, what Annabeth built after all wasn't a building or a temple but a friendship based in love and mutual trust so strong that not even the queen of the gods could tear the memory of that away from him

asinoeiv:

Kind of a study to see how I would colour their skin tones and draw their special features I'm quit happy with most of them (except Anubis his skin tone is driving me insane)
